Our pool surround cleaning service uses low-pressure chemical wash, anti-slip treatment and grout restoration to bring slip resistance back to spec.

Pool surrounds are a unique cleaning challenge. The constant wet environment breeds a specific type of biofilm — a slimy layer of bacteria, body fats, sunscreen residue and algae that's resistant to normal cleaning. This biofilm is the primary cause of slip incidents in leisure facilities, and it's also the source of the 'chlorine smell' that guests complain about (the smell is actually chloramines, produced when chlorine reacts with the biofilm). Standard mopping and hosing doesn't remove it.
Our pool surround cleaning protocol is PWTAG (Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group) compliant. We use a low-pressure chemical wash with a chloramine-neutralising detergent, followed by mechanical agitation with a rotary scrubber, hot-water extraction, and an optional anti-slip treatment. The anti-slip treatment is critical — it's a chemical etch or coating that increases the surface's coefficient of friction, bringing it back to (or above) the HSE's slip-resistance standard for wet barefoot areas.
We work on all common pool surround surfaces: porcelain tiles, ceramic tiles, natural stone (limestone, sandstone, slate), epoxy resin, rubberised safety flooring (Altro, Polyflor), and concrete. Each surface needs a different chemical and method — porcelain can take acidic descaler, but limestone can't; rubberised safety flooring needs a soft brush and pH-neutral detergent to avoid lifting the embossed texture. We test-patch every surface before committing to a method.

Biofilm removal
Low-pressure chemical wash with a chloramine-neutralising detergent that breaks down the biofilm of bacteria, body fats and sunscreen residue. Agitated with a rotary scrubber, then hot-water extracted. This is the core of the service — standard mopping doesn't remove biofilm.
Scale & calcium removal
Hard water scale and calcium deposits on tiles, grout and pool edging removed with an acid-based descaler (porcelain/ceramic only) or a chelating agent (natural stone-safe). Pool edge tile band restored to original colour, not chalky white.
Grout restoration
Grout lines scrubbed, treated with a biocidal grout cleaner, and resealed where required. Missing or damaged grout flagged for repair. We can also re-colour grout to original shade if it's permanently stained — much cheaper than re-grouting.
Anti-slip treatment
Mandatory on commercial pool surrounds. We apply a chemical etch (for ceramic/porcelain) or a clear-coat anti-slip treatment (for natural stone and rubber) that increases the surface's coefficient of friction. PWTAG-compliant, HSE-aligned.
Drain & channel clean
Pool surround drainage channels, gratings and balance tank lids removed, cleaned, descaled, and replaced. We check that gratings are secure (a common safety issue — loose gratings trap toes) and that channels flow freely to the balance tank.
Changing & shower areas
Wet changing areas, shower cubicles, footbaths and jacuzzi surrounds cleaned with the same protocol. Includes tile, grout, drain, cubicle hardware (curtains, hinges, soap trays) and showerhead descale. Anti-slip treatment applied to wet barefoot zones.

Survey & slip test
Free site visit, surface identified, slip resistance measured with a pendulum tester (HSE standard), biofilm and scale assessed. We confirm the chemical and method during the survey, and schedule the work for a closure window.
Pre-treatment & dwell
Pool surround cleared, drainage channels masked, biofilm-breaking detergent applied at the correct dilution, allowed to dwell 10-20 minutes. Scale remover applied to affected areas in parallel.
Scrub & extract
Rotary scrubber with the appropriate brush (soft for rubber, medium for tile, hard for concrete), then hot-water extraction to lift the dirty water off the surface. Drain channels cleaned, gratings removed and descaled.
Anti-slip & re-test
Anti-slip treatment applied (chemical etch or clear coat, depending on surface). Slip resistance re-tested with pendulum. Grout resealed where required. Before/after photos and slip-test report uploaded to your portal.

Chloramine-neutralising chemistry
We don't just clean — we neutralise the chloramines that produce the 'chlorine smell' guests complain about. The smell isn't chlorine, it's chloramines from chlorine reacting with biofilm. Remove the biofilm, remove the smell.
Pendulum slip-tested
We measure slip resistance with a pendulum tester (HSE standard) before and after cleaning. You get a written report with a numerical slip-resistance value — audit-ready for your insurance and HSE compliance.
Closure-window scheduling
We work around your pool's closure schedule. Overnight cleans, weekend shutdowns, or staged cleans (one zone at a time) for facilities that can't fully close. Pool back in service within 6-12 hours of completion.
