Below stairs, properly clean.
Scottish cellars are a magnet for damp, dust, cobwebs and forgotten clutter. Whether yours is a Victorian pantry cellar under a tenement, a stone-flagged coal cellar under a villa, or an earth-floored root cellar under a rural cottage, our damp-aware cleaning protocol addresses the unique challenges of below-ground spaces without spreading spores, dust or musty odours into the living areas above.

More than just a tidy-up.
A genuine baseline reset for your home, delivered by people who actually know it.
Cellars are a distinct cleaning discipline. They're below ground (so moisture migrates through the walls from surrounding soil), they're often unventilated (so airborne spores and dust accumulate), and they're typically used as long-term storage (so clutter builds up over years). Standard cleaning methods that work upstairs — dry dusting, mopping with a wet mop, aerosol sprays — are wrong for cellars. They either spread spores around or trap moisture against surfaces that are already damp.
Our cellar cleaning protocol starts with HEPA-filtered extraction. We use a sealed-vacuum with a 0.3-micron HEPA filter to capture dust, cobwebs, debris and any suspected mould spores without recirculating them into the air. This is critical — cellar dust often contains mould spores, mouse droppings, and historic coal dust, all of which should be captured not aerosolised. Once the loose debris is removed, we assess the surfaces for damp staining, efflorescence (the white mineral salts left by evaporating water), and active mould growth.
We never apply bleach or aggressive biocides to a damp cellar without first addressing the source of moisture — that just kills the visible mould and leaves the substrate primed for re-growth within weeks. Where appropriate, we apply a borax-based or quaternary-ammonium biocidal treatment that kills spores at the substrate, and we'll flag any ongoing damp source (high ground level, failed tanking, broken downpipe) for your attention. Many cellar cleaning jobs end with a recommendation to speak to a damp specialist before re-fitting storage.
Every visit, room by room.
A baseline reset of your home's high-traffic zones — refined after the first three cleans to match your priorities.
HEPA-extracted debris removal
Sealed-vacuum extraction with 0.3-micron HEPA filter captures dust, cobwebs, dead insects, mouse droppings and historic coal dust without recirculating spores into the air. Standard vacuums and dry dusting aerosolise these contaminants — we don't.
Stone-flagged floor clean
Stone flags (limestone, sandstone, slate) cleaned with a pH-neutral cleaner and soft brush. We don't pressure-wash cellar floors — the water soaks into the substrate and worsens damp. Efflorescence (white mineral salts) treated with a specialist efflorescence remover where required.
Earth floor stabilisation
Earth-floored root cellars are gently swept and the surface dressed with a thin layer of clean, dry, kiln-dried sand to bind surface dust. We never wet-clean earth floors — water turns them to mud and accelerates damp rise. The original floor fabric is preserved.
Wall & ceiling treatment
Limewashed, whitewashed and bare stone walls brushed down with a soft-bristle brush and HEPA vacuum. Mould-affected areas treated with a borax-based biocide. We don't apply modern emulsion over limewash — it traps moisture and causes flaking.
Clutter sorting & removal
Optional add-on. We work with you to sort accumulated clutter into keep / donate / recycle / tip categories. Items removed to your specification — to a charity shop, to the local recycling centre, or to a specific room upstairs. £0 disposal fee for charity-donatable items.
Dehumidifier loan
After cleaning, we can leave a desiccant dehumidifier on site for 3-7 days to pull residual moisture from the substrate. This is particularly valuable after a damp cellar has been cleaned, and before re-installing storage. Charged as a separate hire fee.
Add-ons available on any visit: oven cleaning, fridge clean-out, inside cabinets, laundry folding, ironing, pet area sanitisation, window interiors, and more — all bookable from your client portal.
From quote to first clean in 48 hours.
No pushy sales calls. No multi-week onboarding. Just a clear, four-step path to a cleaner home.
Cellar survey
We identify floor type (stone flag, earth, concrete), wall finish (limewash, bare stone, render), ventilation, and any active damp or mould. Test for hazardous materials (coal dust, asbestos-containing residues) on pre-1970s cellars.
HEPA extraction
Sealed-vacuum with 0.3-micron HEPA filter captures all loose debris, cobwebs, dust and spores. Airborne particulate monitored with a particle counter to confirm capture. No dry dusting, no aerosols.
Surface-specific clean
Floor and walls cleaned with the appropriate method for the substrate. Limewash preserved, not painted over. Efflorescence treated. Mould treated with borax-based biocide. Wet methods used only where appropriate.
Damp assessment & handover
Moisture meter readings taken on walls and floor. Active damp sources flagged. Dehumidifier left if requested. Before/after photos and damp report uploaded to your portal.

Six commitments we make to every recurring client — written into your service agreement, not just our marketing.
HEPA-filtered extraction
0.3-micron HEPA sealed vacuum captures spores, mouse droppings and coal dust without recirculating them. Standard vacuums aerosolise these — we don't.
Damp-aware chemistry
We never bleach a damp cellar without addressing the moisture source — that just kills visible mould and primes the substrate for re-growth. Borax-based biocides where appropriate.
Heritage substrate trained
Limewash preserved, not painted over. Stone flags cleaned with pH-neutral chemistry. Earth floors dressed with kiln-dried sand. We respect original fabric.
Same-day service
Most cellar cleans take 3-6 hours on-site. Dehumidifier loan for 3-7 days if required. Re-fit storage after 7 days of dehumidification for best results.
Damp source flagged
We don't just clean the symptom — we identify and report the moisture source. High ground level, failed downpipe, broken tanking. Many cellar cleans end with a damp specialist referral.
Moisture report & photos
Moisture meter readings on walls and floor, plus before/after photos and a written damp assessment. Audit-ready if you're applying for a damp-proofing grant or insurance claim.
Real cleans. Real results.

Loved by Scottish households.
“Victorian pantry cellar under our flat, full of decades of accumulated stuff and a strong musty smell. Maundy Clean sorted the clutter, HEPA-vacuumed every surface, treated the mould, and left a dehumidifier for a week. Smell gone, cellar usable again. They even flagged that our neighbour's broken downpipe was the source of the damp.”
“Stone-flagged cellar under a 1890s villa, used as a wine store. Black mould on the north wall and efflorescence on the flags. They cleaned with pH-neutral chemistry (no bleach — they explained why), treated the mould with borax, and gave me a written damp report. Specialist referral sorted the downpipe and the cellar has stayed clean.”
“Earth-floored root cellar under our cottage, used historically for storing root veg. Damp and dusty. They dressed the floor with kiln-dried sand (no water — they explained why), vacuumed the walls and ceiling, and left it bone-dry and earthy-smelling. The original character is preserved. Brilliant work.”
