BSL-1 and BSL-2 biological zone protocol
BSL-1 (Biosafety Level 1 — no known pathogen risk) and BSL-2 (Biosafety Level 2 — moderate hazard, e.g. E. coli, Staphylococcus, HIV, Hepatitis B/C) zones cleaned under HSE HSG272 biological agents protocol. EN 14476 virucidal chemistry throughout. Biological spill protocol (absorbent granules, disinfectant, scoop, biohazard bag). Biological waste coordination (autoclave bags, sharps containers, biohazard bags — coordinated with your autoclave operator and licensed clinical waste carrier). Operatives in full PPE in BSL-2 zones (lab coat, nitrile gloves, safety glasses). HEPA-filtered vacuum for floor and dust. Chemistry lab — chemical-specific chemistry
Chemistry research labs require chemical-specific chemistry — no incompatible combinations. We use isopropanol (fast evaporation, no residue) for general chemistry surfaces. We never use ammonia-based chemistry near chlorine storage (chloramine gas release). We never use solvent-based chemistry near oxidiser storage (fire risk). We never use chlorine-based chemistry near ammonia storage (chloramine gas). Fume hood exteriors cleaned (interior is the researcher's responsibility). Chemical storage cabinets — exterior only, never interior. Chemical spill protocol (acid, base, solvent, oxidiser — different absorbent and neutraliser per type). Operatives trained in COSHH for chemistry lab environment.
Floor care — HEPA vacuum & dust control
Floor care in research labs: HEPA-filtered vacuum (CRN-rated, no airborne contamination) for dry soil removal. Wet mop with EN 14476 virucidal chemistry (biological labs) or isopropanol (chemistry labs). Mop heads single-use per zone (no cross-contamination between labs). Mop buckets colour-coded per zone.
