Pressure washing with surface-adjusted pressure. Rotary surface cleaners (for large flat areas — even cleaning, no zebra striping, no splash). Lance cleaning (for edges, corners, steps — more precise). Pressure adjusted per surface: 1000-1500 psi for delicate stone (sandstone, limestone, slate), 1500-2000 psi for concrete slabs, 2000-2500 psi for block paving, 2500-3000 psi for hard surfaces (granite, engineering brick). Hot water used where appropriate (more effective on oil and grease, allows lower pressure — less surface damage). We never use excessive pressure — it damages surfaces and we won't do it.

Algae, moss, lichen, and mould treatment — the most common Scottish patio problem. Pressure washing removes the surface growth, but the roots remain — and the growth returns within months. We apply a biocidal treatment (Benz Koncentrate, Algoclear, or equivalent) after pressure washing. The biocide kills the roots and spores, preventing regrowth for 12-24 months. The biocide is absorbed into the surface — it doesn't wash off with rain. We apply it at the right concentration (too weak and it doesn't work, too strong and it can damage adjacent plants — we protect plants where needed). The biocide keeps working for months after application.

Weed removal from joints. Pressure washing removes the visible weed growth, but the roots remain. We remove the roots (manually for stubborn roots, with the pressure washer for shallow roots). Joints cleaned out (the pressure washer flushes the joints). Joint re-sanding: for block paving and jointed surfaces, we apply kiln-dried sand to the joints (essential to re-stabilise the surface, prevent paver movement, and inhibit weed regrowth). Sand brushed in, excess removed, surface compacted (for block paving). For wider joints (Indian sandstone, crazy paving), we use a polymeric sand (sets hard, resists weed growth, doesn't wash out).

Stain removal from patios and driveways. Oil stains (from barbecues, cars, oil leaks): specialist degreaser, agitated, hot pressure wash. Rust stains (from metal furniture, fertiliser, tools): specialist rust remover (oxalic acid-based — careful on sensitive surfaces). Tyre marks (on driveways): specialist degreaser, hot pressure wash. Leaf stains (tannin stains from fallen leaves): specialist tannin remover. Organic stains (bird droppings, berries): enzyme-based cleaner. We test on a small area first — some stains are permanent (particularly on porous stone like sandstone, where the stain has penetrated deeply). We're honest about expected results.

Sealant application for long-term protection (optional add-on). We can apply sealant after cleaning — protects the surface, inhibits regrowth of algae and moss, makes future cleaning easier. Sealant types: penetrating sealers (soak into the surface, invisible, breathable — good for natural stone), film-forming sealers (form a protective film on the surface, can be glossy or matte — good for concrete and block paving), joint stabilising sealers (soak in and stabilise the joint sand — good for block paving). We recommend the right sealant for your surface. Sealant typically lasts 2-5 years depending on traffic and weather. Quoted separately from cleaning.

We're surface-safe — we use the right pressure, the right chemicals, and the right technique for each surface. We never use excessive pressure (it damages surfaces — and we won't do it). We're plant-aware — we protect adjacent plants and lawns from chemical overspray (with sheeting where needed). We're water-aware — we use water efficiently, we don't waste it, and we capture and dispose of contaminated water properly (oily water from driveway cleaning cannot legally go down surface water drains — we capture and dispose of it).
