Scottish gutters block faster than anywhere else in the UK. The combination of mature deciduous trees (sycamore, ash, beech), frequent high rainfall, and moss-heavy roofs means most domestic gutters need clearing twice a year — once after autumn leaf-fall (November-January) and once after spring growth (April-May). Single annual clearing is enough for properties with no overhanging trees; quarterly clearing is recommended for properties under heavy tree cover or with moss-prone concrete tile roofs. Blocked gutters cause four predictable problems: overflow saturates the fascia and rots the soffit, water runs down the wall and penetrates pointing, persistent damp allows mould to grow internally, and frozen blockages in winter split the gutter joint. All preventable for under £200.

We clear gutters one of two ways depending on access. For most domestic properties, we use a ground-level industrial vacuum system with a 4-metre reach pole and a CCTV camera on the head — the operator watches the gutter interior on a monitor while vacuuming, so nothing is missed and no ladders touch the fascia. For taller buildings (three storeys and above), or where the gutter is hidden under a slate verge, we use a cherry-picker or IRATA-certified rope access. We never lean a ladder against the gutter itself — the weight of a ladder plus operator will dent half-round gutters and crack ogee gutters, both of which then leak.

After the physical clear, we flush the entire run with a hose from the highest point to the downpipe. This reveals any residual blockage, any leaky joint, and any sagging bracket. Downpipes are flushed individually — if water backs up, the downpipe is blocked and we rod it clear. We then run a CCTV camera down the downpipe to confirm clear flow to the drain. Finally, we photo-document the cleared gutter and the downpipe exit, and email you the report within 24 hours. You get proof the work was done properly, not just our word.
