Why gyms & fitness studios needs a specialist

Not a generalist. Not a franchise template.

A genuine sector-led protocol delivered by crews who know your regulatory landscape, your audit rhythm, and the cost of getting it wrong.

Gym cleaning is a discipline of disinfection and presentation. Members touch shared surfaces (weights, machines, mats, lockers) continuously, sweat transfers bacteria and viruses, and the smell of a gym at peak time is the single biggest driver of member churn. Maundy Clean has spent over a decade inside Scottish gyms — from independent boutique studios to multi-site leisure chains.

Our gym division operates a two-team model: a day porter team (6am–10pm) handling continuous touchpoint disinfection, equipment wipe-downs, changing room refresh, and bin emptying; and an overnight deep clean team (10pm–6am) handling floor machine-scrubbing, mat sanitisation, shower deep clean, and air-handling unit cleaning. Every task follows gym-specific protocols validated against EN 14476 virucidal standards.

We understand the rhythm of a gym: pre-work peak 6am–8am, mid-morning quiet, lunchtime rush 12pm–2pm, afternoon quiet, evening peak 5pm–9pm. Our crews work around all of it — day porters are part of the member experience (friendly, branded uniforms, never intrusive on workouts), overnight team does the heavy work. We never spray disinfectant near members — only pre-saturated wipes or pour-and-wipe methods during opening hours.

Compliance & Standards

The frameworks we work to.

Every protocol, every checklist, every audit trail — mapped to the standards your regulator expects to see.

EN 14476
European Standard for Virucidal Activity

All shared touchpoints (weights, machines, mats, lockers) wiped with EN 14476 virucidal disinfectant — effective against influenza, HPV, athlete's foot fungus, and other gym-relevant pathogens.

EN 1276
European Standard for Bactericidal Activity

Disinfectants meet EN 1276 bacterial efficacy — verified by batch certification. Critical for MRSA and staph control in shared-equipment environments.

COSHH
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health

Every product carries a current COSHH datasheet. We use low-fragrance, skin-safe products as standard — many members have eczema or sensitivities.

HSE SLIPS
HSE Slips and Trips Guidance

Gym floors (especially wet changing rooms and shower areas) are high-slip-risk. Anti-slip treatment, wet-floor signage, and spill response aligned to HSE SLIPS.

HSG 272
HSE Guidance on Legionnaires' Disease

We include showerhead descaling, water outlet flushing, and temperature checks — critical for gyms with shower facilities.

Pool Water Treatment
PWTAG Pool Water Treatment Standards (where applicable)

For gyms with pools — pool hall cleaning, surround disinfection, and changing room sanitation aligned to PWTAG standards.

Challenges we solve

The pain points you stop worrying about.

We've spent years inside gyms & fitness studios operations. These are the issues we get called about most — and the protocols we've built to eliminate them.

Shared-equipment pathogen control

Weights, machines, mats, and lockers are touched by hundreds of members daily. MRSA, athlete's foot, ringworm, HPV — all transmittable via shared equipment. EN 14476 virucidal disinfection on every touchpoint.

Sweat and odour management

Gym smell is the single biggest driver of member churn. Our protocols address sweat at source — mat sanitisation, fabric upholstery extraction, air-handling unit cleaning, and active odour control (not just masking).

Member-present discretion

Members don't want to see mop buckets or smell bleach during their workout. Day porters use pre-saturated wipes and quiet equipment, wear branded uniforms, and work discreetly around workouts.

Peak-hour presentation pressure

5pm–9pm is peak — and it's also when the gym looks worst. Day porters handle continuous refresh during peak, with extra crews mobilised for the post-peak reset.

Multi-site leisure chain consistency

Multi-site gym chains need consistent standards across every site. We provide consolidated reporting, identical protocols, and a single account manager across all sites.

Member retention pressure

Cleanliness is consistently in the top 3 factors in gym member renewal decisions. Our protocols directly support retention rates — and we measure it via member satisfaction scores.

Frequently asked

Gyms & Fitness Studios — the questions we hear most.

Day porters use pre-saturated disinfectant wipes — quick, discreet, no spray, no smell. Wipe-down of a machine takes 30 seconds. Members are encouraged to wipe down after use (we provide wipes stations), and our porters do a deeper disinfection rotation throughout the day. During peak hours, we focus on high-touch touchpoints (handles, grips, mats) — full wipe-down of every machine happens overnight.
