Books protected. Readers served. Standards met.
Library cleaning is a careful discipline. You have thousands (often tens of thousands) of books, archives, and documents that need protection from dust, mould, pests, and careless cleaning. You have readers who need a clean, quiet, comfortable environment. You have public-access computers, study spaces, children's areas, and often cafes. Our library cleaning service is purpose-built for Scottish public libraries, university libraries, and specialist archives.

More than just a tidy-up.
A genuine baseline reset for your home, delivered by people who actually know it.
Library cleaning is more specialised than it looks. Books are vulnerable — dust degrades paper and bindings over time, mould (common in damp Scottish buildings) destroys paper, pests (silverfish, booklice, rodents) eat paper and bindings, and careless cleaning (wet mops near bookshelves, spray cleaners near books, vacuum cleaners that blow dust around) causes damage. Archives are even more vulnerable — historic documents, rare books, manuscripts need specialist care. At the same time, libraries are public spaces — they need to be clean, comfortable, and welcoming for readers. The cleaning has to balance book protection with reader comfort, and not many cleaning companies understand how to do that.
Our library service covers every area. Reading rooms and book rooms (dusting of shelves and book spines — careful, with soft brushes, never spray cleaners near books; floor vacuumed with HEPA vacuum to prevent dust redistribution; tables and reading desks wiped). Public-access computers (screens cleaned with screen-safe product, keyboards sanitised, mice sanitised — high-touch surfaces). Study spaces (desks wiped, chairs arranged, floor cleaned). Children's area (particular attention to hygiene — children's books, soft play equipment, tables and chairs, floor — all sanitised). Toilets, cafe, and community rooms (cleaned to public-access standards). Staff areas, back office, and processing areas. Entrance and reception (the first impression).
What sets us apart is book-aware cleaning. We don't use spray cleaners near books (overspray damages paper and bindings). We don't use wet mops near bookshelves (splash damage, humidity). We dust book spines with soft natural-hair brushes (synthetic brushes generate static, which attracts more dust). We use HEPA vacuums (standard vacuums blow dust around — HEPA captures it). We monitor for mould (early detection is critical — mould spreads fast and destroys paper). We monitor for pests (silverfish, booklice, rodents — early detection prevents damage). We're careful with rare books and archives (specialist protocols — ask us about archive cleaning). Our staff are PVG-checked (essential for public libraries), uniformed, and trained in library-specific protocols. We carry £5m public liability. We're experienced working with Scottish public library services, university libraries, and specialist archives.
Every visit, room by room.
A baseline reset of your home's high-traffic zones — refined after the first three cleans to match your priorities.
Bookshelves & book spines — careful dusting
Bookshelves and book spines dusted carefully. Soft natural-hair brushes (never synthetic — generates static which attracts more dust). Top edges of books dusted (where dust settles — readers see this). Shelf tops dusted (both above and below books where accessible). We don't remove books to dust (causes damage and misfiles them) — we dust around them. We don't use spray cleaners near books (overspray damages paper and bindings). We don't use feather dusters (they shed and damage paper). For deep cleaning (annual or bi-annual), we can carefully remove books section by section, dust the shelf, and replace — quoted separately.
Reading rooms & study spaces
Reading rooms and study spaces cleaned. Tables and reading desks wiped (with library-safe cleaner — no strong chemicals near books). Chairs arranged (standard layout). Floor vacuumed (HEPA vacuum — captures dust rather than redistributing it). Hard floor mopped (away from bookshelves — splash management). Quiet cleaning (no loud equipment during opening hours — we work before opening or after closing where possible). Lighting and light switches wiped. Window sills dusted. Glazing cleaned (streak-free — readers look through windows).
Public computers & digital areas
Public-access computers cleaned. Screens cleaned with screen-safe product (no ammonia — damages anti-glare coatings) and microfibre cloth (no paper towels — scratch). Keyboards sanitised (high-touch surface — 99.9% of bacteria including cold and flu viruses). Mice and trackpads sanitised. Headphones (where provided) sanitised — particularly important in children's areas. Printer areas wiped. Photocopier glass cleaned. Wi-Fi areas and study tables with power outlets wiped (high-touch). QR code displays wiped. We're careful with equipment — we don't unplug or move things, we don't spray directly onto equipment.
Children's area — enhanced hygiene
Children's area cleaned with enhanced hygiene. Children's book bins dusted (book spines and tops). Soft play equipment (if present) sanitised (children put things in their mouths — food-safe sanitiser). Tables and chairs sanitised (high-touch). Floor vacuumed (HEPA) and mopped (children sit and crawl on floors). Baby change area (if present) sanitised. Activity tables (puzzles, colouring, games) sanitised. Door handles and light switches sanitised (high-touch). We use low-odour, child-safe products (no bleach, no ammonia, no strong perfumes — children are sensitive).
Mould & pest monitoring
We monitor for mould (early detection is critical — mould spreads fast and destroys paper). We check vulnerable areas (damp corners, poorly-ventilated shelves, basements, archives) for mould growth. We check for pests (silverfish, booklice, rodents — early detection prevents damage). If we find mould or pests, we flag it immediately to library staff — we don't try to remediate ourselves (mould remediation on books is a specialist conservation job). We can recommend specialist book conservators (we have relationships with the National Library of Scotland, university conservation teams, and private conservators). Mould and pest monitoring is built into our regular cleaning — not a separate service.
Archive specialist cleaning & PVG-checked team
Archive specialist cleaning available (rare books, manuscripts, historic documents) — specialist protocols, specialist equipment, specialist training. Quote on request. Our standard library cleaning staff are PVG-checked (essential for public libraries), uniformed, and trained in library-specific protocols (book-aware, reader-comfortable, quiet). We carry £5m public liability (covering damage to books and archives). We're experienced working with Scottish public library services (we have contracts with several local authorities), university libraries (we work with several Scottish universities), and specialist archives. References available on request.
Add-ons available on any visit: oven cleaning, fridge clean-out, inside cabinets, laundry folding, ironing, pet area sanitisation, window interiors, and more — all bookable from your client portal.
